Why it matters

Small test. Big picture.

Grip strength is one of the simplest ways to estimate your overall strength and muscle quality. Researchers also use it to study muscle loss and frailty as people age.

You use it all day, from hauling a cooler to Ben T. Davis Beach to holding the bar on a heavy deadlift. That makes it a number worth knowing and worth tracking, whatever your training looks like.

Why the number matters

Every kilogram tells you something.

Lower muscle strength has been linked with poorer health later in life. Grip gives you a simple way to keep an eye on yours.

16%Every 5 kg drop in grip strength was linked to a 16% higher risk of death.

Leong et al., Lancet 2015

Strength responds to training. U.S. physical activity guidelines recommend muscle-strengthening work for all major muscle groups at least 2 days a week.

Grip questions, answered.

What is a handgrip strength test?

A simple, non-invasive test that measures the maximum strength of your hand and forearm muscles. Grip is widely used as a quick estimate of your overall strength and muscle quality.

Why does grip strength matter?

Grip is about more than hand power. You use it for everyday tasks like carrying groceries and lifting weights, and it tends to decline with age as muscle is lost. Every 5 kg drop in grip strength was linked to a 16% higher risk of death (Leong et al., Lancet 2015).

What is a good grip strength score?

It depends on your age and sex. Men tend to grip harder than women, and grip strength tends to decline with age. The reference charts on this page show the range for each age group, from Poor to Elite.

How is my result compared?

Your peak grip is recorded in kilograms and compared with reference values for your age and sex, so the number has context. Our team walks you through where you land.

How often should I retest my grip strength?

Many people retest every 6 to 12 months to track progress and adjust their training. If you play a sport or are coming back from a break in training, you may want to check more often.

Can grip strength be improved?

Yes. Strength training and good nutrition can improve grip strength over time. Our team can share ideas based on your result, and retesting shows whether your work is paying off.

Do I need to prepare for the grip test?

No fasting is needed for the grip test. If you book it with other tests, like a DEXA scan, VO₂ Max test, or RMR test, follow the prep for those tests.
